AN INTRODUCTION TO AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY PROVIDES REWARDING WAY TO MARK BLACK HISTORY MONTH

DETROIT, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Possibly the best way to begin to fulfill the intent and purpose of Black History Month is to learn about the history of African Americans with an appropriate book on the subject.
It's a topic of far greater breadth and scope than most people realize, according to Dr. Alton Hornsby, who has written a chronology in book form designed to cover the major events and people, "Milestones in 20th Century African-American History" ($17.95, Visible Ink Press).
"African Americans have witnessed more momentous changes in their lives than any other minority group in America," said Dr. Hornsby, history department chairman at Morehouse College, Atlanta.
From April 30, 1900, when steam locomotives collided, killing conductor John "Casey" Jones, through the release last Nov. 18 of Spike Lee's film, "Malcolm X," Dr. Hornsby said he has sought to "give all Americans a clearer understanding of how the black American experience has affected our lives."
From the turn-of-the-century age of Booker T. Washington to the new black agenda of the '90s, each era in 20th century African America is brought to life through biographies of influential figures; summaries of important events, legislation and court decisions; and statistics on social, economic, educational and political demographics of the time.
But Dr. Hornsby said "by no means has the course of black American history followed a single path."
In fact, "Milestones" illustrates the differences between Booker T. Washington's turn-of-the-century philosophies on racial relations and the more radical stance of W.E.B. Du Bois in 1903. It compares the 1960s' nonviolent teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. and the aggressive strategies of civil rights leaders such as Malcolm X, Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. Finally, the viewpoints of the late Thurgood Marshall are contrasted with those of conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
"Milestones" also celebrates black America's cultural achievements, with biographies on achievers from all fields.
"Milestones in 20th Century African-American History" is available in bookstores nationwide or by calling 1-800-877-4253.
