 AMWAY PRESENTS $50,000 AMWAY/EBONY ENVIRONMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP CHECK
 TO UNITED NEGRO COLLEGE FUND
 NEW YORK, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Amway Corp., in conjunction with Ebony magazine, today in New York City presented the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) with a check for $50,000 as part of the Amway/Ebony Environmental Scholarship Fund. The scholarship program was introduced in a full-page advertisement in the February issue of Ebony.
 Accepting the check for UNCF was Virgil Ecton, executive vice president and chief operating officer. Amway Diamond Distributors Terral Hardy of New York and Al Hamilton of Michigan made the presentation on behalf of the corporation. Also participating were Lydia Davis Eady, vice president of Promotions for Johnson Publishing, publishers of Ebony, and Dr. Billie J. Hooker, UNCF director of Educational Services.
 Under the program, Amway contributes $50,000 per year to the UNCF to award 10 scholarships to students in the environmental sciences and related fields. Administered by UNCF, nominations for scholarships were made by participating UNCF colleges.
 The following are the recipients, their hometowns, and educational institutions selected by the UNCF educational services staff for the 1992/93 academic year:

 -- Tyrone Clinton, Atlanta; Clark Atlanta University - Atlanta
 -- Tawanna Gordon, Reynolds, Ga.; Morris Brown College - Atlanta
 -- Harold Hurtt, Baltimore; St. Augustine's College - Raleigh, N.C.
 -- Milandria King, Memphis, Tenn.; Spelman College - Atlanta
 -- Sonja L. Lewis, Atlanta; Clark Atlanta University - Atlanta
 -- Annie Mathis, Johnston, S.C.; Benedict College - Columbia, S.C.
 -- Nayo Parrett, Milwaukee; Spelman College - Atlanta
 -- Eddie Richardson Jr., Atlanta; Clark Atlanta University - Atlanta
 -- Fatima Sokera, Atlanta; Clark Atlanta University - Atlanta
 "Support of the Environmental Scholarship Fund is another way Amway emphasizes the important role that our youth and education play in preserving the fragile environment," said Nan Van Andel, vice president for Catalog and Communications.
 Amway is the 1989 recipient of the United Nations Environment Programme Achievement Award.
 The Amway/Ebony Environmental Scholarship Fund reflects the corporation's continuing efforts to promote environmental education and awareness through a variety of projects. These include ICEWALK, the international expedition to the North Pole, and the accompanying ICEWALK Student Expedition, which are the subjects of a PBS educational video series; the Aspen Global Change Institute, which supports environmental research and develops environmental education and outreach programs; and support of MASTERS OF THE ARCTIC(TM) -- ART IN THE SERVICE OF THE EARTH(TM), an exhibition of contemporary Inuit artworks sponsored by the Amway Environmental Foundation.
