AMWAY POLICY BOARD NAMES THOMAS W. EGGLESTON CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

 ADA, Mich., Dec. 1 ~PRNewswire~ -- Amway Corp.'s Policy Board today named Thomas W. Eggleston chief operating officer and executive vice president for Worldwide Direct Sales.
 Eggleston, 40, will take over all chief operating responsibilities for Amway's worldwide direct selling activities effective immediately. Previously, Eggleston served as Amway's executive vice president for North American Direct Sales. The Policy Board will continue to directly oversee Amway's other business interests, including the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel and Peter Island Resort.
 Amway Chairman Jay Van Andel and President Rich DeVos praised Eggleston's proven management skills, effective communication with Amway's network of independent distributors, and organization of Amway's global functions.
 "Tom has quickly grasped the essence of a unique business and built a solid reputation with Amway's management and distributor leadership. His special skill for working with people will be a great contribution to Amway's continued success," DeVos said.
 "Tom joined Amway with a proven record as an effective manager of international business, and he's demonstrated those same skills in helping lead Amway. We have every confidence in his ability to help manage Amway's worldwide growth," Van Andel said.
 Speaking on behalf of the other Policy Board members, Steve Van Andel said, "Tom's unique talents and effective management style will be assets for the Policy Board as it continues to direct Amway's successful worldwide business."
 Before joining Amway in May 1991, Eggleston held positions as general manager of Worldwide Automotive Finishing with Illinois Tool Works, and vice president, general counsel, and secretary for Ransburg Corp. Prior to that, he served as vice president, general counsel, and executive producer for the Organizing Committee of the Tenth Pan American Games, held in Indianapolis.
 Eggleston has been an adjunct professor at the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University and a partner at a Lafayette, Ind.-based law firm. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Dartmouth College and a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law.
 During Eggleston's tenure, Amway's North American operations had record sales and recruiting of distributors for the year ending Aug. 31, 1992. During the same year, Amway's overall sales increased from $3.1 billion to $3.9 billion, and the company reported more than 2 million independent distributors and 10,000 employees worldwide.
 Amway now operates in nearly 60 countries and territories, has a line of 400 Amway products, and markets another 5,000 brand-name products through its PERSONAL SHOPPERS Catalog.
