AMWAY CREATES $50,000 AMWAY/EBONY ENVIRONMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
ADA, Mich., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Amway Corp., in conjunction with Ebony magazine, has created the Amway/Ebony Environmental Scholarship Fund. The scholarship program has been introduced in a full-page advertisement in the February issue of Ebony.
Under the program, Amway will contribute $50,000 per year to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) to award 10 $5,000 scholarships to students in the environmental sciences. Administered by UNCF, nominations for scholarships will be made by participating UNCF colleges.
UNCF educational services staff will select scholarship recipients, and awards will be announced in spring 1992 for the 1992-93 academic year.
"Support of the Environmental Scholarship Fund is another way Amway emphasizes the important role that our youth and education play in preserving the fragile environment," said Nan Van Andel, vice president for Catalog and Communications.
Amway is the 1989 recipient of the United Nations Environment Programme Achievement Award.
The Amway/Ebony Environmental Scholarship Fund reflects the corporation's continuing efforts to promote environmental education and awareness through a variety of projects. These include ICEWALK, the international expedition to the North Pole, and the accompanying ICEWALK Student Expedition, which are the subjects of a PBS educational video series; the Aspen Global Change Institute, which supports environmental research and develops environmental education and outreach programs; and support of MASTERS OF THE ARTIC(TM) -- ART IN THE SERVICE OF THE EARTH(TM), an exhibition of contemporary Inuit artworks sponsored by the Amway Environmental Foundation.
Amway is one of the world's largest network marketing companies, with sales at an estimated retail of $3.1 billion for the fiscal year ended Aug. 31, 1991. Over 1 million independent Amway distributors in more than 50 countries and territories market about 400 Amway products, another 5,000 brand name products through its PERSONAL SHOPPERS(R) catalog, plus a variety of services and educational products.
