AMWAY CORP. ANNUAL SALES INCREASE 15 PERCENT TO REACH $4.5 BILLION FOR FISCAL 1993

ADA, Mich., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Amway Corp.'s Policy Board announced today annual sales of $4.5 billion at estimated retail for the fiscal year that ended Aug. 31.
Annual sales for fiscal 1993 represented a $600 million, or 15 percent, increase over reported sales of $3.9 billion for fiscal 1992.
Amway Chairman Jay Van Andel said Amway's continuing double-digit growth is evidence of the growing momentum of direct selling and the effectiveness of the Amway Sales and Marketing Plan that he and Amway co-founder Rich DeVos introduced when they started their company in 1959.
"In a business climate characterized by sluggish growth, downsizing, and layoffs, Amway continues to grow at a phenomenal rate," said Van Andel. "The network marketing system pioneered by Amway is an exceptional means of marketing products and encouraging entrepreneurs to succeed. Our sales growth also is the result of the hard work of our independent distributors and employees around the world."
Amway President Dick DeVos said the company's leadership in opening and developing international markets is another contributing factor to sales growth.
"Amway has had a philosophy of aggressive international expansion since opening its first overseas market in Australia in 1971," DeVos said. "We've been successful in exporting both Amway products and Amway's unique business plan. Our quality products are popular worldwide -- from the discerning consumers in Japan to customers in the developing country of Mexico -- and our entrepreneurial marketing system is being embraced worldwide, including the former socialist countries of Hungary and Poland."
Amway opened an affiliate in Poland in November 1992 after a successful opening in Hungary in 1991. In March of this year, Amway opened in Argentina, its second South American operation. Amway also this year started construction of a manufacturing plant in the People's Republic of China in anticipation of opening in a province of that country in 1995.
In addition to new international markets, Amway's growth during fiscal 1993 included an increase in worldwide employees from 10,000 to 11,000. Amway also opened a 185,000-square-foot catalog distribution center in Nevada and began construction near its World Headquarters of a 630,000-square-foot, $41 million catalog distribution center.
Headquartered in Ada, Amway is a privately held company owned and operated by the Van Andel and DeVos families. More than 2 million independent distributors in 60 countries and territories market Amway's 400 home care, personal care, health and fitness, home tech, and commercial products, another 5,000 brand name products through Amway's PERSONAL SHOPPERS Catalog, and a variety of services and educational products.
