AMTRAK X2000 FAST TRAIN AIMS TO REDUCE TRAVEL TIME; TRINOVA PRODUCTS HELP INCREASE PASSENGER COMFORT

MAUMEE, Ohio, Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- TRINOVA Corporation (NYSE: TNV) technology is playing a leading role in Amtrak's current demonstration of the revolutionary X2000 fast train now in passenger service between Washington and New York City.
The high-speed train relies on a sophisticated hydraulic system from TRINOVA's Vickers and Aeroquip companies which tilts each car at just the right time and angle when traveling around curves.
 Higher Speeds, Comfortable Ride
"The key to reduced travel time on existing track is to maintain higher speeds through the curves," said James Bloomquist, vice president - technology for Vickers. "With our sophisticated hydraulic technology, the X2000 will be able to travel about 40 percent faster around curves than conventional trains."
Operating through on-board computers that sense the curvature of the track, this active tilting system also helps counteract strong centrifugal forces and gives passengers a comfortable ride.
The Leading Supplier of Hydraulic Tilt Technology
Each car of the X2000 train includes an underfloor hydraulic station that consists of Vickers servovalves, pumps and filters, and Aeroquip hose and fittings. "Reliability is also designed into the system," says Bloomquist, "because the X2000 has a 30-year-plus life expectancy. In addition, we've optimized service through the hydraulic circuit designs."
Vickers and Aeroquip are the leading worldwide suppliers of hydraulic tilt technology. Vickers and Aeroquip hydraulic mechanisms have been specified on the X2000 Swedish train, manufactured by Asea Brown Boveri (ABB), and on similar fast trains for Italy and Finland. Since 1990, the X2000 has been in regular passenger service in Sweden on the Stockholm to Gothenburg run. Using existing rail track, the X2000 has reduced travel time from four hours to just under three hours while maintaining passenger comfort.
 Three-Month Trial Run
Amtrak is conducting a three-month trial run of the high-speed train on the Washington-New York corridor amid predictions that it will lead to revolutionized rail service in the United States. In the densely populated Northeast (from Washington to Boston), Amtrak expects to reduce rail travel time to gain a greater share of the air/rail passenger traffic.
At the conclusion of the three-month demonstration, Amtrak will develop specifications for its U.S. requirements. If the X2000 is selected, ABB Traction, Inc. will manufacture the new trains in Elmira Heights, N.Y.
TRINOVA is a world leader in the manufacture and distribution of engineered components and systems for industry. Its components and systems are sold through its operating companies, Aeroquip and Vickers, to the industrial, aerospace and defense and automotive markets.
