AMTECH ANNOUNCES CONTRACT WITH HARRIS COUNTY TOLL ROAD AUTHORITY
DALLAS, June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Amtech Corporation (NASDAQ: AMTC) today announced its latest contract to supply a turnkey radio frequency identification (RFID) electronic toll collection and traffic management (ETTM) system, this time for the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) in Houston.
The provision of the system will be a joint effort of Amtech and Cubic Automatic Revenue Collection Group. Cubic has been the prime contractor to HCTRA for toll collection equipment since the mid-1980s. The electronic toll collection system, which will allow for convenient non-stop toll collection, will be installed this year on a total of 69 lanes of the Sam Houston Tollway and the Hardy Toll Road. An initial order of 40,000 Amtech identification tags is expected to be supplied to HCTRA. Amtech will act as a subcontractor to Cubic for all services and equipment except tags, which Amtech will supply directly. Amtech valued its portion of the project, including the tags, at approximately $2.8 million.
In addition to Amtech's RFID equipment, Amtech and Cubic will provide computer hardware and software for use in patron account maintenance, management reporting and transaction processing for electronic toll collection. Amtech will also provide HCTRA with management services required for system implementation and public education and enrollment.
The completion of this contract means the three largest toll facilities in Texas will have electronic toll collection provided by Amtech RFID systems. The Dallas North Tollway (DNT), operated by the Texas Turnpike Authority, has utilized the TollTag(R) RFID system for electronic toll collection since 1989. The DNT system today is used by nearly 50,000 motorists and handles over 20 million revenue transactions yearly.
Besides providing enhanced patron convenience, engineering studies have shown Amtech's ETTM system will increase traffic flow, reduce congestion and vehicle emissions and may significantly reduce or eliminate the requirements for expanding the roadway or toll plaza facilities.
Amtech is the world leader in providing RFID-based electronic toll collection systems. Amtech's systems are used or being installed for vehicle revenue collection in large scale operations throughout the United States as well as a number of other countries such as France, Spain, Hong Kong, England and Mexico.
In a related matter, Amtech said that it and Cubic had agreed on a multi-year pact to promote and sell Amtech's ETTM systems to targeted customers. Cubic will also act as an authorized Amtech distributor under the terms of the agreement.
Amtech Corporation designs, manufactures, markets and supports a line of hardware and software products and provides services utilizing its proprietary radio frequency electronic identification technology. Radio frequency electronic identification (RFID) technology permits the remote identification of and communication with trucks, automobiles, rail cars, intermodal containers and other transportation equipment through the use of radio signals. Amtech products are currently marketed to the electronic toll and revenue collection, intermodal transportation, rail transportation, vehicle fleet management and access control, and air freight industries.
