HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- AMP Incorporated (NYSE: AMP), the world's leading producer of electrical and electronic connection devices, has elected Barbara Hackman Franklin, U.S. secretary of Commerce in the administration of former President George W. Bush, to the company's board of directors.
Franklin's experience in international trade and investment is expected to contribute significantly to AMP's strategic plans for aggressive global expansion, according to company officials. Her election increases the number of AMP directors to 13.
Franklin has rendered service to the last five U.S. presidents. Her appointments have included four terms as a member of the President's Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations; advisor to the Comptroller General of the United States; alternate representative and public delegate to the 44th session of the United Nations General Assembly, and one of the first commissioners of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. She began her public service in the Nixon administration as a White House assistant charged with recruiting women to high level jobs in government.
As secretary of Commerce, she successfully unified the department's efforts around a seven-point agenda for competitiveness to support job creation and economic growth in the U.S. The focal point of this agenda was enhancement of the U.S. competitive position in global markets, a key to economic prosperity in a world in which commercial interests now dominate international affairs.
In 1984, Franklin founded Franklin Associates, an internationally recognized consulting firm focusing on government-business relationships, international trade and corporate governance.
A native of Lancaster County, Pa., Franklin graduated with distinction from the Pennsylvania State University and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. She holds honorary degrees from Drexel University and Bryant College. Franklin has been a trustee of the Pennsylvania State University and a member of the State Board of Education in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
She currently serves on the boards of Aetna Life and Casualty Company and Dow Chemical Company. The American Management Association named her one of the "50 Most Influential Corporate Directors" in the U.S.
Franklin resides in Washington, D.C., and Bristol, Conn. She is married to Wallace Barnes, chairman of Barnes Group, Inc., a Fortune 500 manufacturer headquartered in Bristol.
"We are pleased to attract an individual of Secretary Franklin's caliber to our company," said James E. Marley, AMP chairman of the board. "With her unique combination of business, government, academic and consulting experience, she adds a valuable dimension to our board."
AMP's decision to elect Franklin to the board comes at a time when the company is moving aggressively to capitalize on new technologies and reinforce its industry leadership around the world. William J. Hudson, president and chief executive officer, noted, "Secretary Franklin's international trade experience will enhance our global expansion, particularly as we enter emerging geographic markets and integrate our activities into a global corporation."
AMP now has subsidiaries in 34 countries. Nearly 60 percent of the company's sales are outside the U.S.
Harrisburg-based AMP Incorporated is the world's leading producer of electrical/electronic connection devices. With 26,300 employees in 165 facilities throughout the world, AMP's sales in 1992 were $3.3 billion. AMP stock is listed on the New York, Pacific and other regional stock exchanges (Symbol -- "AMP").
