AMOCO OIL COMPANY BRINGS SOFTBALL INTO THE SPOTLIGHT; BATTERS ARE A HIT WITH CHARITY

ATLANTA, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Dale Murphy and other sports celebrities welcomed women's softball to the 1996 Olympic games today in the "Amoco/USA Softball Challenge."
Even Murphy, a seven-time major league baseball all-star, was amazed as softball national team pitchers Lisa Fernandez and Michele Smith whizzed high-speed pitches in a batting contest to raise money for Murphy's favorite charity -- the Children's Miracle Network. Pitches were clocked as high as 69 mph.
The three USA Softball Women's National Team members, including catcher Michele Gromacki, helped raise $11,638 for the Children's Miracle Network at the event in Atlanta. Amoco Oil Company hosted the event to help promote its sponsorship of the USA Softball national teams.
"Our new status as an Olympic sport will elevate the image of softball to the professional level at which the sport is now being played," said Don Porter, president of the Amateur Softball Association and the International
Softball Federation. "We are pleased to have a partner like Amoco who is committed to promoting men's and women's sports being played at both the amateur and professional levels."
"Amoco's sponsorship of softball is part of our commitment to support women and men in their efforts to compete in amateur sports competitions," said Jim Boyajian, vice president for Amoco Oil Company. "We hope to heighten awareness of the Olympics' newest sport, which has broad appeal to all age groups. We are especially proud to support the U.S. women's team in its endeavor to win a gold medal in fast-pitch softball in the '96 Games." Amoco announced its four-year sponsorship of the USA Softball National Teams last June.
Amoco Oil Company is the refining, transportation and marketing subsidiary of Chicago-based Amoco Corporation (NYSE: AN) and one of the world's largest petroleum and chemical companies.
