AMOCO OFFERS CARPET FACE YARN PLANTS FOR SALE

AMOCO OFFERS CARPET FACE YARN PLANTS FOR SALE
ATLANTA, June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Amoco Fabrics and Fibers Company

said today it is offering for sale its Andalusia, Ala., and Bainbridge, Ga., plants that produce face yarns used in the manufacture of residential and commercial carpets.
The Andalusia plant has a yearly production capacity of 165 million pounds and employs about 1100, while the plant at Bainbridge, which has been running at reduced capacity, currently employs about 125 and has an annual capacity of about 80 million pounds.
"Amoco has decided to sell the plants because they do not meet our long-term objectives," said Jack F. Godfrey, vice president and general manager of Amoco's fibers and yarns division. "However, they have excellent value that we believe may be more attractive to other companies."
Godfrey said Amoco understands the uncertainty the sale creates for Amoco employees and customers.
"We will do our best to address these concerns," he said. "We also will take steps to ensure that the supply needs of our customers are met."
Amoco's carpet backing, industrial fabrics, and upholstery yarn assets are not affected by the sale announcement.
Amoco Fabrics and Fibers Company, headquartered in Atlanta, manufactures and markets woven and nonwoven polypropylene fabrics and fibers for a wide variety of applications. It is an affiliate of Amoco Chemical Company, a subsidiary of Chicago-based Amoco Corporation (NYSE: AN).
