AMOCO CORPORATION SPONSORS AMERICARES AIRLIFT TO EGYPT
WITH MEDICAL SUPPLIES WORTH $1 MILLION FOR EARTHQUAKE RELIEF
CAIRO, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Amoco Egypt Oil Company President Charles J. Pitman today announced that medical supplies valued at approximately $1 million (U.S.) will be delivered to Egypt for earthquake relief as a result of contributions by The Amoco Foundation, Inc. and Amoco Egypt.
According to Pitman, Amoco arranged for AmeriCares, the U.S.-based, non-profit disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization, to select needed medical supplies, transport them by air and oversee the distribution to appropriate medical facilities in Egypt.
"Our company is pleased to provide support that will assist a community where many of our employees work and live," Pitman said. "Through the contribution that makes this airlift of medical supplies possible, we hope to assist the victims of the earthquake in a meaningful way."
The airlift, which departed from Bradley International Airport in Hartfort, Conn., at noon EDT today, includes supplies such as IV solutions, dialysis treatments and infant formula, which are generally needed following an earthquake.
"For nearly 30 years, Amoco has had a strong and enduring relationship with the government and people of Egypt," Pitman said. "Our contribution is made on behalf of all of our employees and partners in Egypt."
In addition to its contribution for the airlift, Amoco Egypt has established an earthquake relief fund for employee contributions. Donations from Amoco employees will be administered through The Red Crescent Society (in affiliation with The Red Cross).
"Although our operations remained unaffected by the natural disaster, some homes of our Egyptian co-workers were damaged by this devestating earthquake," Pitman said.
Amoco Egypt employs some 80 national and 90 expatriate employees in Egypt. Also, Amoco Egypt is a joint venture partner with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) in a company called Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company (GUPCO). GUPCO employs some 4,000 employees who work in offices in Cairo and field operations in Ras Shukheir, the Gulf of Suez and the Western Desert.
The airplane that is transporting the medical supplies is scheduled to arrive in Cairo at 11:15 a.m. (Cairo time) Oct. 22. Among those who will greet the cargo at the airport are Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Dr. Hamdi El Banbi; EGPC Chairman Dr. Mostafa Shaarawi; GUPCO Chairman Shawky Abdine; and Pitman.
Amoco Egypt Oil Company is a subsidiary of Amoco Production Company, the worldwide petroleum exploration and production subsidiary of Amoco Corporation. The Amoco Foundation is funded by Amoco Corporation (NYSE: AN).
