CALGARY, Alberta, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Amoco Canada Marketing Corp. and Energy National Inc. today announced the signing of a 15-year contract whereby Amoco will supply 45 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of natural gas and associated gas transportation management services for Energy National Inc.'s US$250 million state-of-the-art Crockett Cogeneration Plant in the San Fransisco Bay area.
Upon targeted completion in late 1995, the plant will produce steam for C&H Sugar Co.'s refinery in Crockett, Calif., as well as 240 megawatts of electricity for sale to Pacific Gas and Electric Co. The natural gas fueled plant was unanimously approved by the California Energy Commission, which noted the plant would have a significant impact on improving air quality in the region by displacing older, higher- emission steam and power generating sources.
"The contract underscores our commitment to leadership in the electric power segment of the natural gas market," said Thomas Ehinger, vice president, Natural Gas and Sulphur for Amoco Canada Petroleum Company Ltd., parent company of Amoco Canada Marketing Corp. "It also is right on target with our strategic direction towards securing more long-term gas contracts," he said.
"The electric power industry is expected to be the largest growth sector for North American gas demand," said Ehinger. "This agreement is further demonstration of Amoco's commitment to providing leadership in expanding market use, access and flexibility of natural gas."
Amoco Canada Petroleum Company Ltd. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Amoco Corp. Ehinger noted that Amoco is the largest private natural gas producer and reserve holder in Canada and North America, and has the ability to supply this market with gas from various producing North American basins.
"The natural gas supply and transportation arrangements we have in place with Amoco and PG&E are the culmination of the collective efforts of our organizations over the past 18 months," said Dennis Quinn, project development manager with Pacific Generation. "We have been very impressed with Amoco's progressive approach in solving the gas related operational challenges we faced with the project."
The plant will be owned by the Crockett Cogeneration Limited Partnership, developed by Energy National, Inc. Energy National is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pacific Generation Co., a unit of PacifiCorp, a diversified utility based in Portland, Ore. that provides electric service to seven western states. Pacific Generation owns interests in 11 operating electric-generation projects, operates five of the facilities, and is developing three more.
