AMOCO ANNOUNCES OIL AND GAS DISCOVERY IN DEEPWATER GULF OF MEXICO

HOUSTON, July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Amoco Production Company today announced that a recent exploratory well in the Central Gulf of Mexico has discovered significant oil and gas resources.
The deepwater wildcat well, Amoco OCS-G 6894 No. 1 in Viosca Knoll Block 915, encountered approximately 135 feet of net oil and gas pay in multiple sands. A sidetrack drilled to test the lateral extent of the sands logged about 170 net feet of oil and gas.
The original well was drilled to a total depth of 12,568 feet in 3,236 feet of water. The sidetrack reached a total depth of 13,411 feet. The well is located approximately 100 miles south of Mobile, Ala., and about 70 miles east of the mouth of the Mississippi River. Also, the well is about seven miles northeast of the nearest discovery well in the Viosca Knoll 912 Unit (also known as the Ram/Powell Unit).
According to David F. Work, Amoco Production Company group vice president for worldwide exploration, the company will drill additional exploration wells in the area to further delineate the extent of the new field discovery.
"Amoco has discovered a significant new oil and gas field with this well and will test potential with additional drilling, which should begin within the next year," Work said. "The results of additional exploration will help us complete an appropriate development plan for the new field."
The recent discovery is the third deepwater exploratory well drilled by Amoco in the Gulf of Mexico in the past eight months. The other two wells encountered oil and gas, but will require further evaluation to determine whether they are commercial. They are located in Mississippi Canyon Block 84 and Desoto Canyon Block 133 in 5,149 feet and 6,521 feet of water, respectively. Both wells are within 20 miles of the discovery announced today.
Amoco operates and owns a 75 percent working interest in Viosca Knoll Block 915. Shell Offshore Inc. holds a 25 percent working interest.
Amoco Production Company is the worldwide oil and gas exploration and production subsidiary of Amoco Corporation (NYSE: AN).
