AMGEN APPOINTS PETER TEELEY VP, GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC RELATIONS; ANNOUNCES PLANS TO OPEN WASHINGTON OFFICE

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Amgen Chairman and CEO Gordon Binder today announced the appointment of former U.S. Ambassador to Canada Peter B. Teeley to the newly created position of vice president, government and public relations. Teeley will oversee state and federal government relations activities, public relations programs and will be involved with Amgen's country managers located around the world.
Binder also announced the appointment of Judi Lindsey Teske, former deputy assistant secretary for legislation at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), as Amgen's director of healthcare policy. Both Teske and Teeley will be working out of Amgen's new Washington office.
"Pete Teeley is an experienced professional who has already made invaluable contributions to Amgen's Washington presence," said Binder. "We are pleased he has accepted this challenging and important position." Prior to Teeley's appointment to the Canadian post, he served as consultant to Amgen for three years.
"The federal government's growing role in health care combined with Amgen's growth and success mandated our full-time presence in Washington," Binder said. "We are now poised to play an even more meaningful role in the current health care policy debate."
"I am delighted to join Amgen, the leader of the biotechnology industry. I have long held that biotechnology is one of the most vibrant and important industries in the United States," Teeley said.
Before serving as ambassador to Canada, Teeley held a variety of positions with the federal government. He is former press secretary and assistant to Vice President George Bush, ambassador to the United Nations Children's Fund and Harvard Fellow at the Kennedy School of Government.
Teske will be working with government policy makers on health care issues important to Amgen's future. "Judi Teske brings senior level, broad-based Washington experience to Amgen. She will make a significant contribution to our Washington efforts," Binder said.
In addition to her HHS experience, Teske's background includes executive positions with the Providence Health Foundation, the Catholic Health Association and the American National Red Cross Blood Program.
