AMG steel recycling to build plant

AMG Resources Corp. has announced plans to build and operate the world's largest steel can recycling facility in St. Paul, MN. Under an agreement involving a five county region surrounding the city, the plant will have the initial capacity to process 40,000 tons of steel food, beverage and aerosol cans annually; it will be fully operational by the beginning of the second quarter, 1990, a spokesman said.

"We're pleased to be working with Anoka County and other Minnesota and Wisconsin communities to help them reduce solid waste and extend the life of the area's landfills," said Allan Goldstein, president and chief executive officer, AMG. "In addition, the region's taxpayers will save the cost of landfilling the ferrous portion of their trash and benefit from the revenues as we buy the material."

Currently, the counties of Anoka, Hennepin, Sherburne, Stearns and Benton sort all refuse and bury in landfills those materials that are not appropriate for waste-to-enery conversion at the Northern States Power Elk River plant.

"These communities are now spending $18,000 per week to bury all of the steel in the municipal solid waste," said Robert Chevalier, director of steel can recycling, AMG. "If you include what we will pay for the steel, the total savings is well over $1 million."

Construction has already begun at a 23-acre site located on the Mississippi River; the plant will feature complete barge and rail accessibility and is convenient to the area's major highway systems. The plant will employ the patented Cutler Used Can Preparation System, which removes contaminants such as dirt, paper, plastic and food material and densifies the steel into pellets which are then ready for the detinning process.

AMG will also install its exclusive electrolytic detinning system, which separates the tin from the steel. When the process is complete, the prepared steel will be shipped to steel mills and foundries requiring very low residual scrap for the steelmaking process. The tin will be utilized in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries which require very pure tin.

AMG constantly monitors active-recycling communities to indentify opportunities for expansion. The Twin Cities area was attractive because the community's solid waste stream contains sufficient volumes of ferrous material to make the plant economically feasible, and its ready access to transportation.
