AMEX PRESCRIBES NEW STOCK ALIGNMENT FOR ITS BIOTECHNOLOGY INDEX; REPLACES IMMUNEX CORPORATION WITH IMMUNE RESPONSE CORPORATION

NEW YORK, June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Stock Exchange today replaced Immunex Corporation with Immune Response Corporation in its index of 15 leading biotechnology stocks, The Biotechnology Index (ticker symbol: "BTK").
The change was due in part to the announcement of a recent merger between The Immunex Corporation, a Seattle-based immunological research and development company, and Lederle Oncology Corp., a unit of American Cyanamid. The decision to replace the stock, which also was removed from Standard & Poor's MidCap 400 Index, was made based on a majority of the stock now being held by Lederle. Immunex has been a component of Amex's Biotechnology Index since the Index was created by the Exchange in October of 1991.
Immune Response Corporation, of Carlsbad, Calif., is a biopharmaceutical company that manufactures and markets products for use in the treatment of HIV infection.
The Biotechnology Index is a compilation of the most dynamic, liquid and growth-oriented companies that use biological processes to develop products used in the treatment of health care problems worldwide. Options trading was launched on the Index in October of 1992.
Each component stock listed in the BTK is represented in equal dollar amounts. "Equal dollar" weighting is designed to provide a more rounded and accurate measurement of the U.S. biotechnology industry as a whole.
Total capitalization for the stocks in the Index is $91.8 million as of yesterday's close. Including the above stock replacement, the Exchange's Biotechnology Index is composed of the following company stocks:
 Amgen Inc. Genzyme Corporation
 Biogen, Inc. Greenwich Pharmaceuticals Inc.
Cambridge Biotech Corp. Immune Response Corporation
 Centocor Inc. Liposome Company, Inc.
 Chiron Corporation Scios Nova Inc.
 Cytogen Corporation Synergen Inc.
 Enzon, Inc. XOMA Corporation
 Gensia Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
The Amex trades a total of 326 stock options, including 86 options on over-the-counter stocks, as well as 43 LEAPS. In addition, options are traded on six broad-market indexes -- the Major Market Index (XMI), the XMI LEAPS(TM) Index (XLT), the S&P MidCap 400 Index (MID), the Institutional Index (XII), the Japan Index (JPN) and the EUROTOP 100 Index (EUR) -- as well as five industry based indexes -- the Oil Index (XOI), the Computer Technology Index (XCI), the Pharmaceutical Index (DRG), the DRG LEAPS(TM) Index (DGL) and The Biotechnology Index (BTK).
