 AMERICAN STOCK EXCHANGE DAILY REPORT
 NEW YORK, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock Exchange closed higher today in heavy trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed up 2.44 to 401.71, the first time it ever closed above 400. Advances led declines 342 to 284 with 222 issues unchanged. The average price per share rose seven cents.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 19,663,680 shares, up from the 19,254,445 shares traded yesterday. After-Hours volume totaled 0 shares, bringing the cumulative volume for today to 19,663,680 shares.
 There were 207 block trades, while 228 blocks were traded in the previous trading session.
 Topping the most active list was Digicon, up 1/4 to 4-1/4 on 1,335,300 shares, followed by Energy Service Corp., down 1/8 to 1-3/8 on 760,900 shares. The third most active issue, Instrument Systems Corp., was up 1/8 to 6 7/8 on 391,900 shares.

 Trading in options was active today with 210,554 contracts changing hands as compared with 198,268 contracts traded yesterday. Calls were higher as puts traded lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the Tele-Communications, Inc. series, unchanged at 1 3/4 on 2,300 contracts, followed by the Union Carbide Feb. 22 1/2 series, down 1/4 to 7/8 on 1,021 contracts. The third most active was the Midlantic Corporation Apr. 5 series down 1/8 to 11/16 on 950 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the United States Surgical Jan. 30 series, up 1/16 to 1/8 on 2,934 contracts, followed by the United States Surgical Jul. 30 series up 3/8 to 1 3/8 on 2,929 contracts. The third most active was the Glaxo Feb. 30 series, up 1 13/16 to 4 1/2 on 2,855 contracts.
 AMEX Index Options closed as follows:
 Major Market Index: up 1.69 to 349.06. Contracts volume 9,873, with 4,091 puts and 5,782 calls.
 Capped Major Market Index: up 1.69 to 349.06. Contracts volume 0, with 0 puts and 0 calls.
 XMI Leaps Index: up .17 to 34.91. Contracts volume 580, with 520 puts and 60 calls.
 Institutional Index: up .77 to 440.68. Contracts volume 2,380, with 1,828 puts and 552 calls.
