AMEX LAUNCHES OPTIONS TRADING ON THE NORTH AMERICAN TELECOMMUNICATIONS INDEX

 NEW YORK, Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Stock Exchange today began trading put and call options on the North American Telecommunications Index, its new index of 15 of the most widely held, highly capitalized telecommunication stocks. Listed under ticker symbol "XTC", the Index represents stocks and American Depositary Receipts of companies from the United States, Canada and Mexico.
 Options on the XTC opened with strike prices of 310, 315, 320, 325 and 330. Initial expiration months are December and January of 1993, and February, April and July of 1994. Timber Hill Inc. is the specialist unit for the new options.
 Designed to track the movements of the telecommunications industry as a whole, XTC consists of the following companies' stocks:
 ALLTEL Corporation American Telephone & Telegraph
 Ameritech Corporation Company
 BCE Inc. Bell Atlantic Corporation
 BellSouth Corporation GTE Corporation
 MCI Communications Corporation Northern Telecom Limited
 NYNEX Corporation Pacific Telesis Group
 Southwestern Bell Corporation Sprint Corporation
 Telefonos de Mexico, S.A. US WEST Inc.
 de C.V.
 At the start of today's trading, the Index level stood at 320.19.
 The Amex trades a total of 355 stock options, including 99 options on over-the-counter stocks, as well as 44 LEAPS(R). In addition, options are traded on eight broad market indexes -- the Major Market Index (XMI), the XMI LEAPS(R) Index (XLT), the S&P Midcap 400 Index and MidCap LEAPS(R) (MID), the Institutional Index (XII), the Japan Index (JPN), the EUROTOP 100 Index (EUR), and the Morgan Stanley Cyclical (CYC) and Consumer (CMR) Indexes -- as well as six industry-based indexes -- the Oil Index (XOI), the Computer Technology Index (XCI), the Pharmaceutical Index (DRG), the DRG LEAPS(R) Index (DGL), the Biotechnology Index (BTK), and the BTK LEAPS(R) Index (BKL).
