AMEX INDEX SURGES TO RECORD HIGH FOR 36th TIME THIS YEAR; LEADS ALL MAJOR INDICES IN 1993

 NEW YORK, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Stock Exchange Market Value Index closed at an all-time high of 463.36, after a gain of 1.78. It was the 36th time this year the index hit a new peak. The previous record was set yesterday when it closed at 461.68.
 The Amex Index has jumped 16.06 percent in 1993, far outpacing the gains in all other major market indices for the year (see below).
 The Amex Market Value Index is the composite weighted value of equity securities traded on the American Stock Exchange.
