AMEX EQUITY VOLUME UP 6.8 PERCENT OVER LAST YEAR; SETS ALL-TIME YEARLY HIGH OF 3.59 BILLION SHARES. OPTIONS VOLUME UP 5.9 PERCENT

 Emerging Company Marketplace Trades 51 Million Shares
 NEW YORK, Dec. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Equity trading on the American


Stock Exchange totaled an all-time record 3,595,779,405 shares in 1992, up 6.8 percent from the 3,367,122,261 shares traded in the prior year. Daily volume averaged 14.1 million shares, up from the 13.3 million share level in 1991.
 The Exchange's previous record year for equity trading was 1987 when 3,505,954,875 shares changed hands at an average of 13.8 million shares a day.
 Trading in the Exchange's new Emerging Company Marketplace, which began operations on March 18, totaled 51.3 million shares. Created to provide smaller companies with all the benefits of the auction market system, the ECM is a separate market and its volume is recorded independently from the Exchange's primary market activity.
 Options trading totaled 40,808,430 contracts, up 5.9 percent over last year's level of 38,535,282 contracts. Daily options volume in 1992 averaged 160,663 contracts, compared with 152,313 in 1991.
 The Amex Market Value Index closed out the year at 399.23, slightly above its 1991 close of 395.05. The index had reached an all-time high of 418.99 on February 12. The low for the year was 364.85 on October 9.
 The principal amount of bonds traded for the year totaled $894,210,000, second only to the record $952,175,000 traded in 1991.
 Hanson PLC Class B Warrants topped the most active list in 1992 with 159,091,400 warrants traded, followed by Wang Laboratories, Class B, 124,962,500 shares; Chambers Development, Class A, 80,057,300; Amdahl, 78,774,700; U.S. Bioscience, 70,281,800; Hillhaven, 56,324,200; Exploration Company of Louisiana, 55,309,200; Echo Bay Mines, 55,856,100; Fruit of the Loom, 54,791,900, and IVAX Corporation, 51,592,300.
