AMETEK'S EARNINGS INCREASE FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE QUARTER

AMETEK'S EARNINGS INCREASE FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE QUARTER
PAOLI, Pa., July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- AMETEK, Inc. (NYSE: AME) today

reported the highest sales and earnings for any second quarter in its history.
Sales in the quarter ended June 30, 1992, reached $195.3 million, more than 7 percent ahead of the $182.1 million which the diversified industrial manufacturer shipped in the second quarter of 1991.
Net income in the current quarter was up 24 percent to $11.8 million or 26 cents per share compared to the $9.5 million or 21 cents per share that AMETEK earned in last year's second quarter. The strong second quarter this year marks the third consecutive quarter of earnings increases for AMETEK, with net income slightly ahead of the first quarter's $11.3 million. The first two quarters of 1992 combined to show record net income for the first half, up 28 percent to $23.1 million or 52 cents per share earned on record sales of $392.1 million. In the first six months of 1991, AMETEK earned $18.1 million or 41 cents per share on sales of $361.3 million.
"The company performed well despite the wavering economy in the second quarter," AMETEK's President and Chief Executive Officer Walter E. Blankley said, "which demonstrates the strength inherent in our diversified business mix. While second quarter sales were up a little more than 7 percent, operating income was up 36 percent and pretax income was 26 percent ahead of last year's second quarter results. This suggests that our people and programs are properly focused on our long- term goals."
Blankley said AMETEK's electric motor operations both here and in Europe continued to run at record levels, with the gains attributable to new product developments and increased market share. "This is the third consecutive quarter of record sales for the Electro-mechanical group, with new orders running 20 percent ahead of last year." AMETEK builds motors for manufacturers of vacuum cleaners and other appliances, copiers, computers and business machines, high-efficiency furnaces and medical equipment in 40 countries worldwide.
"The Industrial Materials group of plastics and metal powder producers saw lower than expected demand as the economy stumbled in the second quarter," Blankley noted. "The expected upturn in consumer- related markets failed to materialize, resulting in relatively flat sales for the group, and we see little significant near-term improvement."
AMETEK's Precision Instruments group sales were down about 6 percent in the first half, primarily due to significantly reduced requirements for aircraft instruments by both the commercial airlines and the military. About half of the Precision Instruments group's $300 million annual sales is in instruments for aircraft builders and airlines worldwide. The decrease in this market has been partially offset by increased orders for heavy truck instruments.
The balance of this group -- divisions that produce instruments for equipment, process plants and refineries, production control and displays, emissions monitoring and gas analysis -- experienced a slight decline in new orders in the second quarter, resulting from industry postponing some capital spending.
"Based on the first six months, AMETEK has momentum and is on its way to a very good year," Blankley said, "and if there is a strengthening of this anemic economic recovery, we could see an improved performance in the second half."
