ROCKY HILL, Conn., April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Ames Department Stores, Inc. today announced net sales of $171.7 million for the five weeks ended April 3, 1993, compared with net sales of $186.0 million for the five weeks ended March 28, 1992. Net sales for the nine-week year-to- date period were $296.4 million, compared with net sales of $325.9 million in the year earlier period. Comparable-store sales for the March five-week period were $171.7 million, compared with $160.6 million in the same period last year, an increase of 6.9 percent on a 309-store base. Comparable-store sales for the year-to-date period were $296.4 million, compared with $280.9 million in the year-earlier period, an increase of 5.5 percent.
Peter Thorner, Ames' president and chief operating officer, said, "Despite the March blizzard, which forced Sunday closure of a third of the chain and resulted in a significant reduction in that weekend's sales, we were pleased to report our fourth straight month of comparable-store sales increases. Our efforts remain focused on improving gross margin levels and narrowing the first-quarter loss reported last year."
Ames operates 309 discount department stores in 14 Northeastern states. The stock of the newly reorganized Ames (AMES) is trading on a when-issued basis on the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation (NASDAQ) system.
