AMES REPORTS JULY SALES

ROCKY HILL, Conn., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Ames Department Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMES) today announced net sales of $145.6 million for the four weeks ended July 31, 1993, compared with net sales of $173.5 million for the four weeks ended July 25, 1992.
Net sales for the 26-week year-to-date period were $931.7 million, compared with net sales of $1,068.7 million in the year-earlier period. July 1993 and year-to-date sales were based on the current 309-store chain, compared with July 1992 and prior year-to-date net sales, which represented 369 stores.
Comparable-store sales for the July four-week period were $145.6 million, compared with $151.1 million in the same period last year, a decrease of 3.7 percent on a 309-store base. Comparable-store sales for the year-to-date period were $931.7 million, compared with $927.4 million in the year-earlier period, an increase of 0.5 percent.
Peter Thorner, Ames' president and chief operating officer, said, "July sales results were affected, in part by continuing uncertainty in the Northeastern economy that has resulted in declining consumer confidence, and the deliberate de-emphasis on the promotion of lower- margin merchandise. Our primary focus is on maintaining improved earnings and gross margin levels, both of which are ahead of our expectations, and we expect in September to report a significantly lower loss for the first half than last year."
Ames operates 309 discount department stores in 14 Northeastern states.
