AMERITECH PROVIDING COMMUNICATIONS RELIEF TO KAUAI

AMERITECH PROVIDING COMMUNICATIONS RELIEF TO KAUAI
CHICAGO, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Ameritech is lending its

communications expertise and facilities to assist hurricane-stricken Kauai as it proceeds on the road to recovery.
The Chicago-based communications company, whose cellular subsidiary, CyberTel, provides cellular mobile service in Kauai, is shipping additional equipment and personnel to the island to provide much-needed communications support. The equipment was shipped to Kauai yesterday. Ameritech's mobile communications service will be provided free to residents temporarily.
On the island, CyberTel's cellular mobile service is almost fully operational, while Kauai's landline telephone service is operating minimally and sporadically.
"Ameritech's cellular mobile service will be used largely in place of their normal telephone service," said John Cusack, Ameritech Mobile director of external affairs. "It's expected to take many months before telephone service will be back to normal, and until then, we want to do what we can to ensure necessary communications support."
About 1,000 mobile telephones and other cellular equipment and about 25 Ameritech technicians are being sent to Kauai. The facilities and personnel will assist in providing communications to police, fire and other emergency personnel and to temporary housing shelters that have been established.
In some cases, the mobile phones will be provided to designated homes and businesses so others within a certain area without telephone service can use Ameritech's communications service communally.
Ameritech is the Chicago-based parent of the Bell companies serving Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, and several other information-related subsidiaries, both foreign and domestic, providing mobile communications, directory publishing, audiotex services, lease financing and systems integration. Its 1991 revenues were $10.8 billion.
