AMERITECH FOCUSES ON HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY WITH NEW BUSINESS STRATEGY

CHICAGO, March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Ameritech (NYSE: AIT) today announced the formation of a new division to deal specifically with the increasingly complex information needs of the health care industry.
The Health Connections division will work exclusively on the specific information needs of patients and providers in community-based health care networks throughout the United States and will offer specialized clinical information systems.
"There is so much communications can do to improve the quality of our lives and our health care," said R. Joseph Sullivan, who's been named head of the division. "This special division demonstrates Ameritech's commitment to bringing communications solutions to the problems facing our nation's health care system, and our resolve to make patient needs a top priority."
One service offered by Health Connections assists health care providers in establishing health information networks, said Sullivan. The networks connect hospitals, clinics, departments, even physicians' offices, whether they are located in one city or spread out across a large area. Last year, Ameritech launched the Wisconsin Health Information Network in Milwaukee. It is believed to be the most extensive health care system of its kind in the nation.
Other services include clinical information systems developed by Knowledge Data Systems, Inc., an Ameritech subsidiary, which provides specialized patient-centered information technology and services.
"Health Connections can improve the exchange of clinical data and simplify administrative functions in the health care industry," said Sullivan. "Patients, providers, employers and insurance carriers all can benefit because of cost savings and improved quality of health care."
The Health Connections division will be based in Chicago. Ameritech is a leader in providing full-service communications and advanced information services to about 12 million customers in the Midwest. It also has operations in New Zealand, Poland and other international markets. Its 1992 revenues were $11.2 billion, and assets exceed $22 billion.
