AMERITECH BELL COMPANIES INTRODUCE VOICE MAIL SERVICES
CHICAGO, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Residential and business customers across the five-state Ameritech region will soon be able to obtain voice mail service directly from their local Ameritech Bell company, the company announced today.
Voice Mail from Wisconsin Bell was introduced to customers in the Milwaukee area last week. Within the next 45 days, the service will be introduced to customers in the major metropolitan areas served by Illinois Bell, Indiana Bell, Michigan Bell and Ohio Bell (Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland and Columbus, respectively). This rollout represents an increased availability of voice mail in these areas.
"Voice mail is more than just an improvement over answering machines -- it's really an information service that gives people added control over their lifestyles and businesses," said Tom Gray, director of information services marketing for the Ameritech Bell companies.
"Many people have enjoyed the convenience and reliability of voice mail as customers or employees of large businesses; now, we're bringing those benefits to consumers and the rest of the business marketplace as well," added Gray.
A unique advantage of voice mail is its ability to accept messages when a customer is already on the phone. That way, callers won't receive a busy signal and customers can retrieve calls when it's most convenient for them.
Voice mail technology works in connection with the network supporting customers' phone service, so customers with voice mail get the latest in voice mail system technology, without having to buy a new answering machine every few years. And unlike, phone answering machines, voice mail service won't be disrupted during a power outage.
Ameritech's voice mail services will provide many of the same features voice users are already accustomed to seeing in the workplace. With the standard voice mail package, customers will be able to place a one-minute greeting message, and callers will have three minutes to leave their messages.
The service will store up to 30 messages for 16 days, indicating the date and time of each call. Cost for this package will be about $7 per month, varying slightly in each Ameritech Bell company.
An enhanced voice mail service offers a longer greeting, storage capacity of 60 messages, and two-way message capability. The enhanced package is especially useful for small businesses and people who work at home. The monthly price for this service is about $14.80.
By the end of 1993, the service will be available to more than two thirds of Ameritech's Bell company customers in major metropolitan areas.
Ameritech is the Chicago-based parent of Bell companies serving Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, as well as several other information-related subsidiaries, both foreign and domestic, providing mobile communications, directory publishing, audiotex services, systems integration, lease financing. Its 1991 revenues were $10.8 billion.
