 AMERICANS SEEK WEIGHT LOSS HELP
BLUE BELL, Pa., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Nutri/System, Inc. announced

today, that in just a one-week period, an unprecedented 58,000-plus people phoned the Nutri/System 1-800-321-THIN(R) to take advantage of a fall promotion.
According to company Chief Executive Officer Albert J. DiMarco, the "Lose All The Weight You Can Before Thanksgiving For Free" promotion is not new to the 21-year-old company, but the outstanding inquires are a surprise. "This is not traditionally a big time of year for the weight loss industry," said DiMarco. "We have run introductory offers and free service promotions before, but we have never had this type of response before Thanksgiving."
DiMarco speculates that there are several reasons for this year's overwhelming reply. First, people naturally want to lose extra pounds now, before the holidays which typically focus on eating. Another reason he gives is the current recession, and the fact that many people can now take advantage of Nutri/System services and pay just for the food.
According to Leslie Siegel, Ph.D., and director of psychological services for Nutri/System, there is another reason the promotion has done so well. "During the holidays, people know they will eat and drink more, which increases the fat and calorie content in a person's diet. The additional fat and calories translate into extra unwanted pounds. By taking preventative steps before the holidays, people can learn how to get control and have a better chance of enjoying the holidays without overeating."
"The key now is to help people stay on a weight loss program right through the holidays and into the new year." Siegel said. To help in this goal, Siegel has created several holiday tips:
-- Don't deprive yourself during the holidays because this can lead to frustration and subsequent overeating. Instead watch your portion sizes. It's ok to eat some of your favorite foods in moderation.
-- Try to control the menu as much as possible. If the holiday meal is at your house, use lower-fat ingredients when cooking and be sure to have plenty of fruits and vegetables on hand. If you're a guest, offer to bring a dish that happens to be lower in fat.
-- Increase your activity level to help burn off extra calories. Try taking walks before and after you eat.
-- Set realistic goals. Remember, nobody's perfect and you may make mistakes. If you do, forgive yourself and use the experience as an opportunity to learn.
