AMERICANS' SUMMER VACATION PLANS IN A HOLDING PATTERN WAITING FOR AIRFARE SALE

WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Eighteen million Americans are still waiting for an airfare sale, but 66 percent of them say they will take a summer vacation anyway -- sale or no sale, according to the U.S. Travel Data Center, the research arm of the Travel Industry Association (TIA).
"Today's airfare sale between USAir and Southwest Airlines is serving as a catalyst for getting these Americans traveling," observed Travel Industry Association President Edward R. Book. "The demand for summer vacations has been strong, but many more potential travelers have been playing the `wait and see' game. If these type of airfare sales continue, our already strong summer vacation season will be stretched well into the fall."
One out of 10 U.S. adult residents postponed plans to take a vacation by air this summer to see if airfares would be reduced as they were last summer. Of those who did postpone a vacation to wait for reduced fares, approximately one-third still plan to take a vacation by air even if airfares do not go down significantly. Thirty-six percent will take a vacation by car instead, and another thirty-three percent will not take a vacation at all.
Of those who did not postpone their travel plans for the summer, twenty-three percent of respondents reported they would have flown this summer had the airfares been significantly reduced in the spring. Groups most likely to claim this were 18-24 year olds (30 percent) and mid-Atlantic region residents (30 percent).
TIA is the national, non-profit organization representing all components of the $380 billion travel industry. TIA's mission is to promote travel to and within the United States. U.S. Travel Data Center is the research and consulting affiliate of TIA.
