AMERICAN WASTE SERVICES, INC. ANNOUNCES CONTRACT EXPIRATION

WARREN, Ohio, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Ronald E. Klingle, chairman of the board of directors of American Waste Services, Inc. (NYSE: AW), today announced that on Sept. 23, 1993, the company received notice from the City of Cleveland indicating that its contract for the transportation and disposal of municipal waste from the city's Ridge Road transfer station will expire on Oct. 21, 1993, because the city had elected not to exercise the options to renew. The city had previously solicited proposals for a continuation of the services currently being performed by American Waste Services, Inc. The company declined to submit a proposal, objecting to the form of the request for proposals and the actions taken by the city in connection with the proposal process. The company believes that the city has acted improperly and the company is currently reviewing its legal rights. American Waste Services, Inc. is pursuing additional business to replace the approximate 900 tons of municipal waste per day represented by the contract.
American Waste Services, Inc. provides integrated waste management and environmental services, including disposal, transportation and transportation-related services, disposal brokerage and management services, environmental engineering, site assessment, analytical laboratory and remediation services to industrial, commercial, municipal and governmental customers.
