 TO BE TAKEN BY CALIFORNIA ATTORNEY GENERAL
 SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- American Stores Co. (NYSE: ASC) announced today that it has received notification from the California attorney general's office that it will take no antitrust action with respect to American Stores Co.'s acquisition of 85 stores in California operated under the Consumer Value Stores ("CVS") tradename. The company expects the transaction to close in early February.
