AMERICAN STORES ANNOUNCES PLAN TO REALIGN CORPORATE STRUCTURE

 SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- American Stores Co. (NYSE: ASC) announced today a plan to realign its corporate structure. Lawrence A. Del Santo will move from chairman and chief executive officer of the Lucky Stores Inc. subsidiary to assume responsibility for all American Stores Co. grocery operations. David L. Maher, currently chairman, president and chief executive officer of American Drug Stores Inc. will continue to have overall responsibility for drug operations, and like Del Santo, will become part of the American Stores Co. management team based in Salt Lake City.
 Another facet of the reorganization will be the assembling of a logistic planning function under the direction of Arlyn E. White, presently executive vice president-marketing for the American Drug Stores Inc. subsidiary. White will relocate to the company's Salt Lake City headquarters to focus on national buying, consolidated buying in certain applicable areas, warehousing and distribution trends, coordination of private label programs, and new tools and capabilities to enhance merchandising. Additionally, Teresa Beck, executive vice president, administration, will assume responsibility for administrative functions throughout the company which include accounting, information systems, tax and internal audit.
 American Stores Co.'s grocery operations include Jewel Food Stores, headquartered in Melrose Park, Ill; Acme Markets, headquartered in Malvern, Pa.; Star Market, headquartered in Cambridge, Mass.; Lucky Stores Inc., Northern California operations, headquartered in San Leandro, Calif.; Lucky Stores Inc., Southern California operations, headquartered in Buena Park, Calif.; and Jewel Osco, headquartered in Albuquerque, N.M. Grocery operations generated $17.1 billion in revenue in the 1991 fiscal year, making American Stores Co. the nation's second largest food retailer. Drug store operations include Osco Drug, headquartered in Oak Brook, Ill., and Sav-on, headquartered in Anaheim, Calif. Drug store sales accounted for $3.7 billion in revenue during the same period.
 The newly defined responsibilities for Del Santo, Maher and White and Beck will take effect on Feb. 1, 1993. They all will report to Victor L. Lund, president and chief executive officer.
