AMERICAN STOCK EXCHANGE TOPS ALL U.S. MARKETS IN 1993; AMEX MARKET VALUE INDEX OUTPACES ALL OTHER MAJOR INDICES; VOLUME ROCKETS TO RECORD LEVEL

 NEW YORK, Dec. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Stock Exchange led a record-shattering year on Wall Street in 1993.
 The Amex Market Value Index significantly outgained all other major market indices by jumping 19.52% during the year to finish at 477.15.
 By contrast, the Dow Jones Industrial average rose 13.72%, the NASDAQ composite index 14.76%, the NYSE Composite Index 7.86% and the S&P 500 7.87% in 1993 (see attached chart).
 The Amex Index surged to a record high 44 different times during the year, including the all-time mark of 484.28 on Nov. 2.
 Amex trading volume soared to a record 4,582,013,270 shares, a 27.4% increase over 1992's record volume of 3,595,789,405 shares. Daily volume averaged a record 18.1 million shares, up from 14.1 million last year.
 Echo Bay Mines was the most actively traded stock in 1993 with 197,161,300 shares. (See chart for top 10 active stocks.) The American Stock Exchange listed 133 new issues in 1993, more than doubling 1992's total. It was the highest total of new listings since 1987 when 152 were added.
 Options trading totaled 44,018,532 contracts, up 4.9% over last year's level of 41,955,501 contracts. Daily options volume in 1993 averaged 173,986 contracts, compared with 165,179 in 1992.
 Trading in the Amex's Emerging Company Marketplace totaled 66.9 million shares, up from 52.5 million shares in 1992. The ECM is a separate market and its volume is recorded independently from the Exchange's primary market activity.
 The principal amount of bonds traded for the year totaled $785,623,000, compared with $894,210,000 in 1992.
