AMERICAN STOCK EXCHANGE ISSUES LEAD U.S. STOCKS IN 1993

NEW YORK, May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- American Stock Exchange issues, as measured by the Amex Market Value, are outperforming all other major market indices so far in 1993.
The Amex Market Value Index has risen 6.94 percent this year to a record high of 426.95 after yesterday's session.
That increase is more than 60 percent above the rise in the Dow Jones Industrial average; 3-1/2 times the gain in the New York Stock Exchange Composite Index; four times the boost in the Standard & Poor's 500; and 15 times more than the slight uptick in the NASDAQ Composite Index (see accompanying chart.)
"The impressive performance of the Amex Market Value Index illustrates the interest of public investors in the mid-size growth stocks listed at the American Stock Exchange," said Exchange Chairman James Jones.
The Amex Market Value Index is the composite weighted value of equity securities traded on the American Stock Exchange.
