AMERICAN STOCK EXCHANGE DAILY REPORT

 NEW YORK, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock Exchange closed higher today in active trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed up 0.29 to 397.60. Advances led declines 322 to 243 with 206 issues unchanged. The average price per share rose one cent.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 16,574,360 shares, up from the 15,375,640 shares traded yesterday. There was no after-hours trading activity.
 Topping the most active list was Rhone-Poulenc contingent value rights, up 5/8 to 4-5/8 on 1,454,800 shares, followed by Elan Corp., down 2-3/8 to 31-5/8 on 620,400 shares. The third most active issue, Cheyenne Software, was up 1-3/4 to 31 on 619,200 shares.

 Today's cumulative volume in the Emerging Company Marketplace (ECM) totaled 566,400 shares. The most actively traded stock on the ECM was MedPhone Corp., up 3/16 to 5/8 on 128,200 shares.
 Trading in options was active today with 246,406 contracts changing hands as compared with 193,117 contracts traded yesterday. Calls closed generally higher as puts traded mostly lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the Philip Morris February 70 series, up 5/8 to 1-5/8 on 2,518 contracts, followed by the Philip Morris March 70 series, up 5/8 to 2-1/2 on 2,285 contracts. The third most active was the Philip Morris January 70 series up 1/4 to 5/8 on 2,106 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the Philip Morris March 75 series, down 9/16 to 1-13/16 on 6,833 contracts, followed by the Philip Morris January 75 series down 3/8 to 1/4 on 3,744 contracts. The third most active was the Digital Equipment January 35 series, up 1 to 1-9/16 on 3,731 contracts.
 AMEX Index Options closed as follows:
 Standard & Poor's MidCap Index: up 0.34 to 159.16. Contracts volume 3,146, with 2,969 puts and 177 calls.
 Major Market Index: down .99 to 344.45. Contracts volume 6,629, with 3,051 puts and 3,578 calls.
