AMERICAN STOCK EXCHANGE DAILY REPORT

 NEW YORK, Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the Amex set its all-time high for annual equity volume. Shortly after the opening, year-to-date volume shares surpassed the Exchanges's previous high of 3,505,954,875 shares set in 1987.
 Prices on the American Stock Exchange closed higher today in heavy trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed up 1.13 to 392.79. Advances led declines 280 to 299 with 226 issues unchanged. The average price per share rose four cents.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 18,777,715 shares, up/down from the 20,413,910 shares traded yesterday. There was no after-hours volume activity today.
 Topping the most active list was Nabors Industries, unchanged at 6-3/8 on 2,003,200 shares, followed by Aamdahl, up 1/4 to 7-1/8 on 1,287,100 shares. The third most active issue, Hillhaven was up 1/16 to 4-3/16 on 754,000 shares.

 Today's cumulative volume in the Emerging Company Marketplace (ECM) totaled 409,100 shares. The most actively traded stock on the ECM was Intertel Communcations, unchanged at 7/8 on 125,200 shares.
 Trading in options was moderate today with 182,336 contracts changing hands as compared with 180,628 contracts traded yesterday. Puts were higher as calls traded lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the American Express DEC 20 series, up 1/16 to 15/16 on 5,781 contracts, followed by the U.S. Surgical JAN 170 series, down 1-1/2 to 102-3/4 on 3,650 contracts. The third most active was the Midcap Index JAN 137 1/2 series unchanged at on 3,000 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the Philip Morris MAR 80 series, down 5/16 to 2-1/16 on 3,712 contracts, followed by the Midcap Index JAN 137 1/2 series up 3/8 to 20-5/8 on 3,000 contracts. The third most active was the Midcap Index JAN 142 1/2 series, up 1/8 to 15-5/8 on 3,000 contracts.
 AMEX Index Options closed as follows:
 S&P Midcap Index: down .12 to 157.31. Contracts volume 26,485, with 13,280 puts and 13,205 calls.
 Major Market Index: down 1.99 to 350.34. Contracts volume 4,854, with 2,318 puts and 2,536 calls.
 XMI Leaps Index (XLT): down .20 to 35.03. Contracts volume 92 with 92 puts and 0 calls.
 Institutional Index (XII): down 2.28 to 449.97. Contracts volume 775 with 375 puts and 400 calls.
 Institutional Index (PXP): down 2.28 to 449.97. Contracts volume 337 with 167 puts and 170 calls.
 Eurotop 100 Index: down .66 to 433.96. Contracts volume 20 with 10 puts and 10 calls.
 Japan Index: unch to 178.81. Contracts volume 934, with 379 puts and 555 calls.
 Pharmaceutical Index: down 7.23 to 200.84. Contracts volume 1,954, with 581 puts and 1,373 calls.

 Oil Index: down .18 to 229.07. Contracts volume 25, with 25 puts and 0 calls.
 Equity Options Total Volume: 62,783 puts and 119,553 calls.
