 NEW YORK, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock


Exchange closed higher today in moderate trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed up 1.09 to 367.71. Advances led declines 280 to 246 with 206 issues unchanged. The average price per share rose three cents.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 12,703,305 shares, down from the 15,124,570 shares traded yesterday. There was no after-hours activity reported.
 Topping the most active list was Amdahl Corporation, down 1/8 to 8-1/4 on 606,900 shares, followed by Preferred Health, up 2 to 17-3/8 on 473,800 shares. The third most active issue, American Exploration was down 1/16 to 2-5/16 on 411,000 shares.

 Today's cumulative volume in the Emerging Company Marketplace (ECM) totaled 196,000 shares. The most actively traded stock on the ECM was Environmental Diagnostics, up 5/8 to 10-1/4 on 42,600 shares.
 Trading in options was light today with 142,818 contracts changing hands as compared with 276,959 contracts traded yesterday. Calls were higher as puts traded lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the U.S. Surgical October 55 series, up 5/16 to 1-5/16 on 2,743 contracts, followed by the American Express April 20 series, down 1/8 to 1-1/2 on 2,032 contracts. The third most active was the Japan December 160 series down 2-1/2 to 5 on 2,018 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the Novell, Inc. February 30 series, up 1/8 to 2-1/4 on 3,207 contracts, followed by the Novell, Inc. November 27 1/2 series up 7/16 to 2-3/8 on 3,134 contracts. The third most active was the Japan December 190 series, up 1/2 to 4-1/2 on 2,001 contracts.

 Standard & Poor's MidCap Index: up 1.22 to 141.72. Contracts volume 901, with 776 puts and 125 calls.
 Major Market Index: down 1.47 to 338.44. Contracts volume 9,277, with 3,917 puts and 5,360 calls.
