 NEW YORK, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Trading on the American Stock


Exchange closed lower today in moderate trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed down 1.49 to 383.36. Declines led advances 318 to 234 with 189 issues unchanged. The average price per share fell four cents.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 9,691,285 shares. the adjusted volume figure for last Friday is 1,237,160. Trading at the Amex closed early on Friday due to a smoke condition in the building. After-hours volume totaled 4,300 shares, bringing the cumulative volume for today to 9,695,585 shares.
 Topping the most active list was U.S. Bioscience, Inc., down 3/8 to 7 7/8 on 387,000 shares, followed by Fruit of the Loom, up 5/8 to 40 1/2 on 362,300 shares. The third most active issue, IVAX Corp. was down 1 3/4 to 27 3/8 on 338,900 shares.

 Today's cumulative volume in the Emerging Company marketplace (ECM) totaled 175,000 shares. The most actively traded stock on the ECM was AUDRE Recognition Systems, up 1/16 to 2 5/8 on 42,700 shares.
 Trading in options was heavy today with 197,786 contracts changing hands. Puts were higher as calls traded lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the U.S. Surgical October 70 series, up 1 to 3 7/8 on 2,833 contracts, followed by the U.S. Surgical September 70 series, up 1/2 to 1 7/8 on 1,630 contracts. The third most active was the U.S. Surgical October 65 series up 1/8 to 2 1/4 on 1,218 contracts,
 Topping the most active list in calls was the Phillip Morris September 80 series, up 1/8 to 5 1/8 on 21,350 contracts, followed by the Phillip Morris September 75 series up 1/8 to 10 1/8 on 18,938 contracts. The third most active was the Phillip Morris September 70 series, up 1/8 to 15 1/8 on 15,359 contracts.
