 NEW YORK, Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock


Exchange closed higher today in moderate trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed up 0.09 to 386.82. Advances led declines 272 to 214 with 216 issues unchanged. The average price per share rose one cent.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 11,444,075 shares, up from the 10,014,800 shares traded yesterday. After-Hours volume totaled 4,100 shares, bringing the cumulative volume for today to 11,448,175 shares.
 Topping the most active list was Wang Systems, Class B, down 1/2 to 1-5/8 on 1,560,000 shares, followed by Plains Resources, down 6-1/2 to 8-7/8 on 811,000 shares. The third most active issue, Amdahl was down 1/8 to 13-1/8 on 543,200 shares.

 Today's cumulative volume in the Emerging Company Marketplace (ECM) totaled 150,400 shares. The most actively traded stock on the ECM was Topox, Inc., up 1/8 to 2-5/16 on 35,300 shares. Trading in options was light today with 109,603 contracts changing hands as compared with 119,717 contracts traded yesterday. Calls were higher as puts traded lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the U.S. Surgical September 65 series, down 1-1/4 to 7/8 on 1,427 contracts, followed by the Amgen August 65 series, up 1-3/8 to 3-1/2 on 1,312 contracts. The third most active was the Phillip Morris August 80 series down 1/4 to 5/8 on 1,142 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the Motorola August 85 series, down 1/4 to 1-1/4 on 2,051 contracts, followed by the Motorola September 85 series down 3/8 to 2-3/4 on 2,050 contracts. The third most active was the Major Market Index August 370 series, unchanged at 1/16 on 1,720 contracts.
 AMEX Index Options closed as follows:
 S&P Midcap Index: up .62 to 144.40. Contracts volume 250, with 76 puts and 174 calls.
 Major Market Index: up 2.07 to 354.40. Contracts volume 8,158, with 1,895 puts and 6,263 calls.
 XMI Leaps Index (XLT): up .21 to 35.44. Contracts volume 34 with 14 puts and 20 calls.
 Institutional Index: up 2.43 to 437.52. Contracts volume 2,822 with 1,366 puts and 1,456 calls.
 Capped Institutional Index: up 2.43 to 437.52. Contracts volume 0, with 0 puts and 0 calls.
 Japan Index: up .58 to 149.36. Contracts volume 2,499, with 1,071 puts and 1,428 calls.
 Pharmaceutical Index: up 2.31 to 217.98. Contracts volume 945, with 640 puts and 305 calls
 Computer Technology Index: up .21 to 114.63. Contracts volume 0, with 0 puts and 0 calls.
 Oil Index: down .36 to 239.99. Contracts volume 37, with 19 puts and 18 calls.

 Prices on the American Stock Exchange closed lower this week in light trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed down 3.31 for the week to 386.82. The Market Value Index reached its intraday high of 390.14 on Monday and slipped to its intraday low of 385.79 on Friday. The average price per share fell one cent this week.
 Regular session stock volume for the week totaled 48,745,300 shares, down from the volume of 49,328,320 shares traded last week.
 Options trading was light this week as 592,953 contracts changed hands, compared with 624,125 contracts traded in last week's session.
