 NEW YORK, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock


Exchange closed higher today in moderate trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed up 1.56 to 393.17. Advances led declines 287 to 264 with 235 issues unchanged. The average price per share rose four cents.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 12,094,430 shares, down from the 12,161,730 shares traded yesterday. After-Hours volume totaled 200 shares, bringing the cumulative volume for today to 12,094,630 shares.
 Topping the most active list was American Exploration, up 1/4 to 2 1/4 on 810,300 shares, followed by Echo Bay Mines, up 1/8 to 5 7/8 on 415,100 shares. The third most active issue, U.S. Bioscience was up 1/8 to 11 3/8 on 343,500 shares.

 Today's volume in the Emerging Company Marketplace (ECM) totaled 240,000 shares. The most actively traded stock on the ECM was Intertel Communications, up 1/16 to 1 5/16 on 38,400 shares.
 Trading in options was light today with 146,852 contracts changing hands as compared with 130,107 contracts traded yesterday. Calls were higher as puts traded lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the Chiron Corp. May 45 series, unchanged at 3/4 on 1,004 contracts, followed by the MidCap May 145 series, down 1/2 to 1 7/16 on 996 contracts. The third most active was the Con Edison Nov. 25 series unchanged at 3/8 on 991 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the Philip Morris Jun. 85 series, up 5/16 to 13/16 on 2,309 contracts, followed by the American Express Jul. 22 1/2 series down 1/8 to 1 3/8 on 2,309 contracts. The third most active was the Philip Morris May 80 series, up 1/8 to 11/16 on 2,055 contracts.

 Major Market Index: up .40 to 312.37. Contracts volume 16,464, with 8,911 puts and 7,553 calls.
 Capped Major Market Index: up .40 to 312.37. Contracts volume 0, with 0 puts and 0 calls.
 LT (XLT) Index: up .04 to 31.24. Contracts volume 3,607, with 607 puts and 3,000 calls.
 Institutional Index: up .35 to 397.95. Contracts volume 2,869, with 1,578 puts and 1,291 calls.
 Capped Institutional Index: up .35 to 397.95. Contracts volume 0, with 0 puts and 0 calls.
 Japan Index: down 3.87 to 220.83. Contracts volume 2,599, with 2,370 puts and 229 calls.
