 NEW YORK, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock


Exchange closed lower today in active trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed down 1.79 to 399.57. Declines led advances 340 to 238 with 254 issues unchanged. The average price per share fell five cents.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 13,823,230 shares, up from the 13,061,605 shares traded yesterday. There was no after-hours trading activity today.
 Topping the most active list was Chambers Development down 1/4 to 10 on 810,500 shares, followed by American Medical Holdings, unchanged at 9 3/4 on 727,600 shares. The third most active issue, ALZA Corp. was down 7/8 to 44 on 421,900 shares.

 Today's volume in the Emerging Company Marketplace (ECM) totaled 443,200 shares. The most actively traded stock on the ECM was Intertel Communications, up 1/16 to 1-13/16 on 61,900 shares.
 Trading in options was light today with 142,520 contracts changing hands as compared with 141,915 contracts traded yesterday. Calls and puts both traded lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the MidCap Apr. 150 series, up 3/4 to 3 3/4 on 2,125 contracts, followed by the Intergraph Apr. 60 series, up 5/8 to 2 1/8 on 1,018 contracts. The third most active was the Telefonos de Mexico May 45 series down 1/8 to 1/8 on 1,000 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the Intergraph Apr. 70 series, down 1/4 to 7/16 on 2,455 contracts, followed by the Intergraph Apr. 65 series down 13/16 to 1 7/16 on 2,273 contracts. The third most active was the Glaxo Apr. 30 series, up 3/16 to 9/16 on 2,096 contracts.

 Major Market Index: up .40 to 312.37. Contracts volume 16,464, with 8,911 puts and 7,553 calls.
 Capped Major Market Index: up .40 to 312.37. Contracts volume 0, with 0 puts and 0 calls.
 LT (XLT) Index: up .04 to 31.24. Contracts volume 3,607, with 607 puts and 3,000 calls.
 Institutional Index: up .35 to 397.95. Contracts volume 2,869, with 1,578 puts and 1,291 calls.
