 NEW YORK, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock


Exchange closed mixed today in heavy trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed down 4.67 to 400.97. Advances led declines 278 to 257 with 286 issues unchanged. The average price per share fell 14 cents.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 28,227,810 shares, up from the 14,674,755 shares traded yesterday. There was no after-hours volume. Today's volume brought the year's total to 1,008,195,695. This is the earliest date that Amex volume has ever topped the one billion mark
 There were 246 block trades up from 217 blocks traded in the previous trading session.
 Topping the most active list was Chambers Development Corp., class A, falling 20 1/8 to 10 3/8 on 13,474,000 shares, followed by ALZA Corp., rising 3/8 to 5/8 on 441,500 shares. The third most active issue, International Corona Corp. rose 1/16 to 4 3/16 on 415,100 shares.

 Trading in options was light today with 140,720 contracts changing hands as compared with 163,564 contracts traded yesterday. Calls were higher as puts traded lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the RJR Nabisco Mar. 10 series, unchanged at 3/16 on 2,395 contracts, followed by the Major Market Index Mar, 345 series, up 1/16 to 13/16 on 1,606 contracts. The third most active was the RJR Nabisco Apr. 10 series unchanged at 3/8 on 1,282 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the Unisys Mar. 10 series, up 1/16 to 3/8 on 2,213 contracts, followed by the Major Market Index Mar. 350 series down 9/16 to 15/16 on 1,793 contracts. The third most active was the MidCap May 150 series, up 3/8 to 3 3/8 on 1,220 contracts.
 AMEX Index Options closed as follows:
 Standard & Poor's MidCap Index: up .42 to 148.79. Contracts volume 5,767, with 1,444 puts and 4,323 calls.
 Major Market Index: down 1.02 to 347.83. Contracts volume 9,100, with 4,953 puts and 4,145 calls.

 The Emerging Company Marketplace opened for trading on the American Stock Exchange featuring 22 companies from 14 states. Volume for the first day of trading on the ECM, which was ushered in by SEC chairman Richard Breeden, totaled 950,900 shares. Intertel Communications was the most active ECM stocks, closing down 1/8 at 2 on 254,100 shares.
