 NEW YORK, Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock


Exchange closed higher today in heavy trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed up 0.45 to 411.37. Advances led declines 295 to 280 with 242 issues unchanged. The average price per share rose two cents.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 16,194,765 shares, up from the 13,920,960 shares traded yesterday. After-hours volume totaled 500 shares, bringing the cumulative volume for today to 16,195,265 shares.
 There were 263 block trades, while 224 blocks were traded in the previous trading session.
 Topping the most active list was Amdahl Corporation, up 1-1/8 to 17-3/4 on 1,109,000 shares, followed by U.S. Bioscience, down 1-3/4 to 31-3/4 on 1,038,100 shares. The third most active issue, Instrument Systems Corporation was up 5/8 to 8 on 615,900 shares.

 Trading in options was light today with 145,339 contracts changing hands as compared with 154,950 contracts traded yesterday. Puts were higher as calls traded lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the American Express Jul. 25 series, up 3/8 to 4-3/4 on 2,700 contracts, followed by the American Express Apr. 25 series, up 1/4 to 2,630 on 2,630 contracts. The third most active was the Major Market Index Feb. 340 series up 9/16 to 3 on 1,060 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the RJR Nabisco Jun. 10 series, down 1/16 to 1-1/16 on 2,600 contracts, followed by the Caesars World Mar. 35 series up 1/4 to 2-1/8 on 1,624 contracts. The third most active was the U.S. Bioscience Feb. 35 series, down 5/8 to 2-3/8 on 1,510 contracts.

 Prices on the American Stock Exchange closed lower this week in heavy trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed down 2.05 for the week to 411.37. The Market Value Index reached its intraday high of 414.46 on Monday and slipped to its intraday low of 408.81 on Wednesday. The average price per share rose two cents this week.
 Regular session stock volume for the week totaled 88,396,645 shares, down from the volume of 124,834,230 shares traded last week. After- hours trading for the week totaled 30,600 shares. There were 1,231 blocks traded during the week, compared with 1,691 blocks traded the previous week.
 Options trading was moderate this week as 803,105 contracts changed hands, compared with 1,372,443 contracts traded in last week's session.
