 NEW YORK, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock


Exchange closed higher today in very heavy trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed up 0.23 to 412.71. Advances led declines 337 to 280 with 236 issues unchanged. The average price per share rose one cent.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 19,224,820 shares, up from the 18,260,000 shares traded yesterday. After-hours volume totaled 10,700 shares, bringing the cumulative volume for today to 19,235,520 shares.
 There were 239 block trades, while 266 blocks were traded in the previous trading session.
 Topping the most active list was Continental Airlines Holdings, down 3/4 to 1 3/8 on 1,368,200 shares, followed by American Medical Holdings, up 7/8 to 11 3/8 on 605,100 shares. The third most active issue, Enzo Biochem was down 1/4 to 5 1/2 on 542,100 shares.

 Trading in options was moderate today with 171,508 contracts changing hands as compared with 149,988 contracts traded yesterday. Calls were higher as puts traded even.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the Disney Feb. 135 series, down 3-1/4 to 1-5/8 on 1,894 contracts, followed by the Major Market Index Apr. 325 series, down 1/8 to 3-1/8 on 1,870 contracts. The third most active was the AMR Corporation Aug. 65 series up 3/8 to 3-3/4 on 1,573 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the Pfizer Mar. 65 series, down 3 to 8-3/4 on 2,715 contracts, followed by the Pfizer Jun 65 series up 3/4 to 11-1/2 on 1,701 contracts. The third most active was the AMR Corporation Aug. 65 series, down 1-5/8 to 10-5/8 on 1,665 contracts.

 Major Market Index: up 4.11 to 350.79. Contracts volume 10,673 with 6,370 puts and 4,303 calls.

 XMI Leaps Index: up .41 to 35.08. Contracts volume 1,062 with 937 puts and 125 calls.
 Institutional Index: down .21 to 431.47. Contracts volume 3,491, with 2,004 puts and 1,487 calls.
