 NEW YORK, Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock


Exchange closed higher today in heavy trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed up 1.55 to 415.32. Advances led declines 360 to 258 with 247 issues unchanged. The average price per share rose five cents.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 25,690,380 shares, up from the 25,679,795 shares traded yesterday. There was no after-hours trading activity today.
 There were 294 block trades, while 421 blocks were traded in the previous trading session.
 Topping the most active list was BAT Industries, up 1/16 to 11-9/16 on 1,078,700 shares, followed by Amdahl Corp., up 3/8 to 18-1/8 on 856,800 shares. The third most active issue, U.S. Alcohol Testing was up 5/8 to 14-3/4 on 494,700 shares.

 Trading in options was heavy today with 347,229 contracts changing hands as compared with 336,169 contracts traded yesterday. Calls and puts both traded lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the Institutional Index Mar. 375 series, down 7/16 to 1-1/4 on 4,943 contracts, followed by the Institutional Index Mar. 475 series, down 20-1/2 to 41 on 4,943 contracts. The third most active was the Major Market Index Jan. 345 series down 1-1/16 to 1/16 on 3,792 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the Major Market Index Jan. 350 series, down 1/2 to 1/16 on 8,472 contracts, followed by the Tele-Communications, Inc. Jan. 15 series down 3/8 to 2-3/8 on 4,978 contracts. The third most active was the Tele-Communications, Inc. Apr. 17 1/2 series, down 9/16 to 1-1/16 on 4,960 contracts.
 AMEX Index Options closed as follows:
 Major Market Index: up 2.38 to 348.82. Contracts volume 31,922, with 12,775 puts and 19,147 calls.

 Prices on the American Stock Exchange closed higher this week in heavy trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed up 9.68 for the week to 415.32. The Market Value Index reached its intraday high of 415.79 on Friday and slipped to its intraday low of 404.57 on Monday. The average price per share rose 29 cents this week.
 Regular session stock volume for the week totaled 124,834,230 shares, up from the volume of 103,280,275 shares traded last week. After-hours trading for the week totaled 7,500 shares. There were 1,691 blocks traded during the week, compared with 1,245 blocks traded the previous week.
 Options trading was active this week as 1,372,443 contracts changed hands, compared with 1,099,355 contracts traded in last week's session.
