 NEW YORK, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock


Exchange closed higher today in very heavy trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed up 4.09 to 407.57, a new all-time record high. Advances led declines 396 to 235 with 243 issues unchanged. The average price per share rose 12 cents.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 23,755,290 shares, up from the 21,537,900 shares traded yesterday. There was no after-hours trading.
 There were 229 block trades, while 329 blocks were traded in the previous trading session.
 Topping the most active list was Chiles Offshore Corp., down 1/8 to 2-1/8 on 924,000 shares, followed by Echo Bay Mines, up 3/4 to 7-7/8 on 737,500 shares. The third most active issue, O'Brien Environmental Energy, Inc. was unchanged 4-1/8 on 672,000 shares.

 Trading in options was active today with 253,085 contracts changing hands as compared with 244,016 contracts traded yesterday. Calls were higher as puts traded lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the Disney & Company Jan. 125 series, down 2 to 1-1/4 on 3,781 contracts, followed by the Merrill Lynch Jan. 60 series, down 3/8 to 1/2 on 1,444 contracts. The third most active was the Major Market Index Jan. 345 series down 1/16 to 2-9/16 on 1,243 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the Glaxo Feb. 35 series, up 3/8 to 1-13/16 on 4,616 contracts, followed by the Barnett Banks Feb. 35 series down 1/4 to 1 on 3,270 contracts. The third most active was the Philip Morris Jan. 80 series, up 1/2 to 1-13/16 on 3,264 contracts.

 Major Market Index: up .27 to 348.64. Contracts volume 10,936, with 6,451 puts and 4,485 calls.
