    NEW YORK, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock


Exchange closed lower today in heavy trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed down 1.44 to 379.47. Declines led advances 356 to 243 with 258 issues unchanged. The average price per share fell five cents.
    Stock volume for the regular session totaled 17,179,885 shares, down from the 20,926,420 shares traded Friday.  After-hours volume totaled 300 shares, bringing the cumulative volume for today to 17,180,185 shares.
    There were 222 block trades, while 297 blocks were traded in the previous trading session.
    Topping the most active list was Rhone-Poulenc CVR's, unchanged at 2-1/8 on 593,300 shares, followed by IVAX Corporation, down 5/8 to 27 on 449,300 shares.  The third most active issue, Carnival Cruise Lines was down 1/2 to 23-1/8 on 379,800 shares.

    Trading in options was moderate today with 221,846 contracts changing hands as compared with 343,712 contracts traded Friday.  Puts were higher as calls traded lower.
    Topping the most active list in puts was the Amgen Jan. 40 series, down 1/16 to 1/2 on 2,697 contracts, followed by the Amgen Jan. 41 5/8 series, up 1/8 to 5/8 on 2,503 contracts.  The third most active was the Major Market Index Dec. 300 series down 2-1/8 to 1-1/2 on 1,415 contracts.
    Topping the most active list in calls was the Glaxo Dec. 30 series, up 1/4 to 1-15/16 on 5,819 contracts, followed by the Amgen Jan. 40 series down 3/4 to 14-1/4 on 2,594 contracts.  The third most active was the Amgen Jan. 41 5/8 series, down 3 to 11-7/8 on 2,500 contracts.
    AMEX Index Options closed as follows:
    Major Market Index: up 5.23 to 318.97.  Contracts volume 20,347, with 9,645 puts and 10,702 calls.
    Capped Major Market Index: up 5.23 to 318.97.  Contracts volume 0, with 0 puts and 0 calls.
    Lt (XLT) Index: up .53 to 31.90.  Contracts volume 2,289, with 1,692 puts and 597 calls.
