    NEW YORK, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock


Exchange closed higher today in heavy trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed up 1.13 to 392.37, a new index high for the year. Advances led declines 311 to 264 with 261 issues unchanged. The average price per share rose four cents.
    Stock volume for the regular session totaled 16,516,820 shares, up from the 11,253,025 shares traded yesterday.  After-hours volume totaled 0 shares, bringing the cumulative volume for today to 16,516,820 shares.
    There were 208 block trades, while 142 blocks were traded in the previous trading session.
    Topping the most active list was Hillhaven Corporation, up 5/8 to 2-1/2 on 1,233,300 shares, followed by Gulf Canada Resources, down 1/8 to 6-3/8 on 605,100 shares.  The third most active issue, SPI Pharmaceuticals was up 1-1/8 to 26-5/8 on 459,400 shares.

    Trading in options was moderate today with 186,392 contracts changing hands as compared with 111,533 contracts traded yesterday. Calls were higher as puts traded lower.
    Topping the most active list in puts was the Philip Morris Dec. 70 series, down 7/16 to 1-9/16 on 3,111 contracts, followed by the Wells Fargo Dec. 65 series, unchanged at 3-5/8 on 1,121 contracts.  The third most active was the Trinity Industries Nov. 45 series down 1/16 to 7/16 on 1,011 contracts.
    Topping the most active list in calls was the Glaxo Dec. 30 series, down 1/16 to 1-1/2 on 6,528 contracts, followed by the USX-Marathon Nov. 30 series up 1/16 to 1/8 on 3,255 contracts.  The third most active was the Glaxo Nov. 27 1/2 series, down 1/16 to 2-1/8 on 3,232 contracts.
    AMEX Index Options closed as follows:
    Major Market Index: up 2.95 to 325.97.  Contracts volume 11,759, with 4,267 puts and 7,492 calls.
    Lt (XLT) Index: up .30 to 32.60.  Contracts volume 5,495, with 2,495 puts and 3,000 calls.
    Institutional Index: up 4.00 to 413.06.  Contracts volume 6,519, with 2,554 puts and 3,965 calls.
    Japan Index: up 4.38 to 248.02.  Contracts volume 678, with 362 puts and 316 calls.
    Computer Technology Index: up 1.08 to 113.63.  Contracts volume 31, with 9 puts and 22 calls.
    Oil Index: up .87 to 249.77.  Contracts volume 39, with 9 puts and 30 calls.
    Most Active Major Market Index Option: Nov. 325 calls, with a total of 2,583 contracts traded.
    Most Active Institutional Index Option: Nov 390 calls and Dec 395 calls, with a total of 900 each contracts traded.
