 AMERICAN RECREATION CENTERS REPORTS RESULTS
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- American Recreation

Centers Inc. (NASDAQ: AMRC) today announced that its earnings for the third quarter ending Feb. 26, 1992, will be negatively impacted by the disappointing results just announced by its majority-owned subsidiary, The Right Start Inc. (NASDAQ: RTST). In today's announcement, Right Start disclosed that its holiday 1991 catalog response rates declined as a result of the recession, which will contribute to a sharp decline in its earnings. However, American Recreation Center's core operation, the bowling division continues to enjoy growth in spite of the recession. The bowling division comprised over half of the company's revenues and over three-fourths of its operating income for the six months ended Nov. 27, 1991.
Robert A. Crist, chief executive officer said, "While we are disappointed that the recession's impact on The Right Start's operating results is so significant, we are proud of the bowling division's continued growth in spite of the sixth straight year of California's drought and the tough economic times. For the first six months of fiscal 1992, the bowling division's operating profits advanced 37 percent on a 12 percent increase in revenues and we are continuing the innovative marketing, management and bowling center remodeling programs that have contributed to this success."
American Recreation Centers is a leader in both the bowling and direct marketing industries. The company's bowling division operates 27 bowling centers, 21 in California and 6 in Texas with an aggregate 1,134 lanes. In addition, the direct marketing division's The Right Start Inc., is one of the nation's leading direct marketers of top-quality products for infants and children.
