AMERICAN POWER CONVERSION EARNINGS UP 71 PERCENT
 FOR SECOND QUARTER OF 1992
 WEST KINGSTON, R.I., July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- American Power

Conversion Corporation (NASDAQ: APCC) today announced record sales and earnings for the second quarter ended June 30, 1992.
Sales for the second quarter of 1992 were $33.2 million, up 57 percent from $21.2 million for the second quarter of 1991. Earnings for the second quarter of 1992 were $5.6 million ($.25 per share), up 71 percent from $3.3 million ($.15 per share) in the second quarter of 1991.
For the six months ended June 30, 1992 sales were $64.1 million, up 66 percent from $38.6 million for the same time period in 1991. Earnings for the six months ended June 30, 1992 were $10.2 million ($0.45 per share), up 87 percent from $5.4 million ($0.25 per share) in the same time period in 1991.
Rodger Dowdell Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer, credited the results to continued strong acceptance of the Company's products across its markets.
"We believe our strategy of segmenting the market with performance and price-oriented product lines is succeeding," said Dowdell.
During the quarter, Computer Reseller News chose the Smart-UPS 2000--the Company's most expensive standard product at $1799 list--as their Editor's Choice.
Meanwhile, the readers of Windows Magazine chose the Back-UPS 250-- the Company's least expensive UPS at $139 list--as Reader's Choice.
Also during the quarter, the Smart-UPS 600 and Smart-UPS 1250 won awards from LAN Technology, and LAN Times, respectively.
"The LAN Times review included a detailed look at most of our major competitors," said Dowdell. "The editor concluded 'It's no wonder the rest of the power protection industry considers APC the company to beat...' "
Dowdell said a highlight of the quarter was the Company's selection to provide up to 1000 Smart-UPS 900XL's with two additional battery packs to the Taiwan Electric Company over the next year. The Smart-UPS 900XL's, which allow users to customize runtime to suit their application, will be used to protect Alcatel switching systems throughout Taiwan.
"This was a significant win for us for two reasons," said Dowdell. "First, despite all the pessimism surrounding this country's ability to compete, here's an American company manufacturing in the US, then shipping heavy units all the way to Taiwan. Yet our manufacturing efficiencies and engineering excellence have allowed us to take a significant piece of business from our Far East competitors right in their backyard," said Dowdell.
"Second, the bid represents a new APC product--the Smart-UPS 900XL--on a new application--telecommunications equipment," said Dowdell. "A year ago, this was business we were giving away to our competitors." Dowdell also said the Company has responded to ongoing international opportunity during the quarter by hiring a dedicated sales person for the area made up by the former Soviet Union.
During the quarter, the Company also announced compatibility with Simple Network Management Protocol, an industry standard which allows any APC Smart-UPS to communicate over a network without the use of a server or workstation.
"As the file-server is the most important piece of a LAN, the smart hub is the critical element in a wide-area network, or WAN," said Dowdell.
"This new SNMP compatibility delivers not just peace of mind from the damaging effects of power problems, but also a comprehensive management tool to help make a network manager's job easier. Warnings regarding blackouts, dead batteries or other alert conditions are automatically delivered to the network manager, whether the physical Smart-UPS is 20 feet or 2000 miles away," said Dowdell.
Dowdell said the Company also continues to expand its domestic and international distribution channels, adding Graybar Electric, Dell Computer's mail order catalog, and Texas Instruments during the quarter.
American Power Conversion (NASDAQ "APCC") is a leading manufacturer of uninterruptible power sources (UPS) and related equipment and software which protects computers and similar power-sensitive electronic equipment from sags, spikes, blackouts and other power anomalies.
