 AMERICAN PACIFIC CORP. ANNOUNCES
 PRELIMINARY U.S. HALOTRON TESTING RESULTS
LAS VEGAS, Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- American Pacific Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS: APFC) announced today the preliminary results of a series of tests of Halotron conducted in the United States. Halotron is a fire suppression system including both a chemical designed to replace ozone- depleting halons and an enhanced application technology.
During the week ended Feb. 7, 1992, a series of technical evaluations and field tests was conducted at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. The reported test results are positive and indicate that the performance of Halotron in these evaluations and tests was equivalent to the performance previously reported in Swedish testing. The company announced previously the positive results of testing at the Swedish National Institute of Testing and Standards and the University of Lund in Sweden.
The company previously announced that it has entered into an agreement giving the company the option to acquire worldwide rights to Halotron. The company is now evaluating the results of the testing at the University of New Mexico with a view to making an immediate decision respecting exercise of its option. The company is also continuing to address the many important issues that are required to protect the company's interest in Halotron and to provide reasonable assurance that it will represent a commercial opportunity for the company. These issues include, but are not limited to, matters of patent or other protection of confidential technical information and securing of the required financial resources to pursue the project.
American Pacific's principal business activity consists of the production of ammonium perchlorate, the oxidizer utilized in composite solid rocket propellants employed in a large number of space and military systems. Under license from Dynamit Nobel AG of Germany, the company is also proceeding with the design of a facility for production of sodium azide, the principal chemical used in automotive airbag inflators, and with the financing required for the construction of that facility. The company has reached agreement with certain institutional investors with respect to the azide plant financing which is now awaiting approval of the Pennsylvania attorney general. As discussed herein, the company is also evaluating Halotron.
The company's other activities include the manufacture of chlorate and perchlorate chemicals, the design and manufacture of electrolytic systems and electrodes, the design and manufacture of pollution control systems and industrial real estate development.
